 Jay Alvaro serves as director of labor relations for Duke Energy in the Midwest and the Carolinas. His primary responsibilities include building and maintaining positive relationships with union leadership; implementing the company’s long-term labor strategy; acting as the chief spokesperson in labor negotiations; and overall contract administration for seven collective bargaining agreements covering approximately 4,000 represented employees in both the regulated and nonregulated businesses in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, North Carolina and South Carolina. He was named to his current position in November 2009.

 Jay’s career with Duke Energy and its predecessor companies spans 29 years. He joined The Cincinnati Gas & Electric Co. in 1986 in the internal audit department. After obtaining his certified public accountant license and working as a financial and information systems auditor, he became a licensed attorney in the state of Ohio in 1995. He subsequently joined Cinergy Corp.’s legal department in July 1996 as an attorney, with a focus on labor and employment law. In July 2005, he joined the human resources department and has since served in several leadership roles. He initially served as a director of human resources for the commercial business unit at Cinergy Corp. Following the Duke Energy/Cinergy merger in April 2006, he became head of labor relations for Duke Energy. He went on to lead the human resources function for Duke Energy’s Commercial Businesses organization in May 2008, and later became head of total rewards in February 2009.

 Jay earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accountancy from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He holds a Juris Doctor degree from the Salmon P. Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University.

 Jay and his wife, Michele, reside in Cincinnati, Ohio and have three children.
